This is my very first free-verse poem written in Northern Ireland since I arrived here last Sept 2005. I was inspired to write this while listening to the guest lecturer in a Christian church where one of my Polish friends always go every Sunday…

   YOU ALWAYS PROVIDE

… a place for me to stay

… the food and water for my hunger and thirst

… a family and friends to comfort me

… the knowledge that I need to gain

… the good news to uplift my spirit!

   BECAUSE YOU

… are the one who created and control everything

… died on the cross to redeem my sins

… give a life for me to treasure and enjoy

… will always love me for whatever I am

… will always be there to care for me – now and forever!

Reading and writing as my past time hobbies… November 13, 2006

WHEN I was pursuing my undergrad degree in Civil Engineering, I was not confident in doing essays as part of the course requirements, or even joining essay writing competitions. Maybe it is because of my primary and secondary schools’ background where I was not really rigorously trained to write – a way of expressing myself. Secondly, I was not used to read and learn beyond the required textbooks, such as pocket books, magazines, newspapers, and other forms of learning through media (television, movies, theatres/plays, tapes) which will influence my ideas and have it into writing. Thirdly, the notion of being a future engineer, I will not be writing so many essays and reports, instead I will be dealing with numbers, drawings and figures! Unfortunately, this is not the case after finishing college and having challenging jobs in a corporate world. Being an engineer/planner and a lecturer, I have to be effective enough to express myself both in verbal and writing. Even now pursuing my PhD, I am still struggling with my writing.

FRANKLY, during those years in college I do write poems in Pilipino, not in English. And because of this enthusiasm to develop my poetic skills, I decided to join the university paper, The Philippine Artisan(Technological University of the Philippines’ student paper/publication) for almost 2 years. Being part of the editorial staff, I was assigned to cover news featured articles relating to accredited clubs/organizations in the university, including literary articles; and came up with my own regular column entitled, The Campus Beat. My membership to the university paper was a stepping stone to improve my reading and writing prowess.

YEARS past…Having the available time and resources now, aside from my regular poems (in English) I do regularly buy and read pocket books with my favorite authors/writers and at the same time write reviews/opinions in two websites where I am member: dooyoo and friendster.

I STARTED my membership with dooyoo (www.dooyoo.co.uk) – a UK based consumers’ website last June 29, 2006. The website offers a full range of information on products and services that consumers need, including comparative pricing for total on-line shopping convenience. Dooyo members are being paid for posting opinions/reviews and shared to the rest of the dooyoo members with a minimum pay of 15 pesos (15 pence) for every rating from a member, and additional 150 pesos (1.50 pounds) for an opinion/review being awarded a ‘yellow crown’ by the dooyoo team every week. To date, I posted 27 reviews covering a wide range of products and services that I previously used such as laptop, wireless mouse, pocket books, airline, tourist attractions, films/movies, musicals/plays, magazines, and airports. Luckily, I got 8 yellow crowns within my 5-month membership with dooyoo which in total I have already accumulated around 4,400 pesos (44 pounds) which I could spend in buying stuffs from Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk ). You can visit my personal account at:

I AM very happy to share to my readers the following reviews that have been awarded for yellow crowns (additional 1.50 pounds each)!

FRIENDSTER on the hand (which this article is written in my personal blog), I maintain three accounts with the website, thinking of developing each account into informative venues about my learning and hobbies. Unfortunately, I have not done it yet, but hopefully in the near future I could link each account to keep inform the people who have access to my principal friendster’s account of my whereabouts. In this website, I also post my photographs taken during my travels. You can visit my personal blog entitled, My Simple Life at:

http://curioustan.blogs.friendster.com/my_simple_life/

or my friendster homepage at:

http://www.friendster.com/user.php?uid=13543639

and my old websites which highlights photographs in the Philippines and my earlier travels in the US, Sweden, UK, and Finland.

Having these websites, I do believe that they are influential in improving my writing and my way of thinking. Having English not my mother tongue, it is quite difficult to express my own ideas and put into writing which I believe requires patience and practice.

Sustaining my relationship with JESUS September 28, 2006

This month is quite a memorable moment of my life. Why? This is the month when I left the Philippine last year to continue my quest for higher learning in Northern Ireland.

For the past months, I was able to cope up with the weather, the Irish accent and most of all the demand for my time in my daily university works as a research student. I visited a lot of places not only around the country but also the rest of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, including my 4 weeks vacation in the US. I feel that it seems everything is fine and ok. But then, I realized today that I was wrong! I missed something which is the essence of everything – having a continuous and active relationship with Jesus. Yes, I go to Sunday mass and that’s it! I don’t have any interaction with other people within the community, except for Pinoys that I met after the service and visit them during parties. Ironically, I don’t have spiritual undertakings with the community which somehow strengthen my relationship with Jesus and see Him alive through other people’s lives. Jesus knows that I longed for a community, a community where I could involve myself spiritually and socially as well.

My visit to the US last July (till August) was the answer to keeping the fire burning in my heart towards reviving and sustaining my relationship with Him. My beautiful cousin for almost 7 years that I haven’t seen her was instrumental to start my desire to reach out with other people. Surprisingly, she is not the cousin that I met before when we were in college. She is now a working mom with 2 healthy kids and a very kind husband. And most of all, she is very generous person who wants to share her blessings to her loved ones, including myself! Having that, she is blessed with everything for a comfortable life in California. And the funny thing is, we have in common – we love shopping! One day during our shopping escapade, she asked me where I want to go and I told her that I want to buy new pocket books. So we went (together with the kids) to a mall with a books section. I got two books written by my favorite author and I was surprised that she handed to me a copy of “Daily Inspiration for the Purpose Driven Life” written by Rick Warren. It is a best seller book released 3 years ago which become an inspiration for people who read this. Before I left the US last month, my cousin requested me to read this, by not only myself but with other people (2 or more) in 40 consecutive days! I attempted to read the few pages of the book, but I decided to follow what my cousin’s advice.

I am back to Jordanstown (Belfast) and start for my second year in the university. This month is also a memorable time of my student life after I successfully passed the confirmation of my PhD and secured my future years of my research studies. And before the month ends, I think my cousin’s wish for me to read the book come true! Today I was able to attend a Christian group at the university and experienced the presence of God in the young people, and heard His voice saying, “feel at home”…Happily, I joined the community in praising, praying and singing … reminiscing my AIT days when I started my journey with Him. Meeting with young minds and hearts is somewhat an encouraging moment for me to start again my spiritual journey with the Lord. The Christian Union (or C U) at the Uni of Ulster (Jordanstown) through the students that I met today (Andrew, Stephanie, Andrew C, Cath, Lynda and many others) will serve my Christian community for the next few years of my stay in the university.

Having the vision of the community, I will be able to GROW in the love of Jesus, be UNITED in God with the rest of the members, and to REACH OUT with other Christians, not only in the university but in Northern Ireland as a whole.

A simple poem to reminds me of my journey with Jesus…

MY JOURNEY …

Yesterday..

I don’t know where did I start

But sure, I’m going somewhere

A place where everyone’s wish to go

Determined myself to reach that far

To dream and explore –

Of what my heart’s desire!

           Today…

It seems every struggle is endless

Full of challenges along the race called – LIFE!

No matter what my mind dictates

Truly indeed a destiny to survive

            Tomorrow …

It seems I don’t know where to stop

It feels like a never-ending journey of soul searching

As a matter of choice of going anywhere

A choice that nobody’s can change

But it is all right – I can make it

to the journey of LIVING!

The True Essence of Living June 30, 2006

This poetic piece was written while I was waiting for a friend who happened to be a priest. McDonald store was the location and I drafted the poem using the tissue papers(napkin) served after buying a meal. So, while waiting for about half an hour for my friend to come, I was able to finish this simple and free verse poem - Existence. I was inspired to write this while thinking of my friend who is serving God forever. With his devotion to our Creator, I was reminded of how we lived our life on earth for the past years and years to come, and searching the true meaning of living!

Existence…

We always question every sad moment in our lives, but we never ask why happy moment exists.

We always see other people’s weaknesses, but we ignore everyone’s strengths.

We always doubt our own capabilities, and never believe in one’s potential.

We always see failure, a threat to our undertaking, but not using it an opportunity to succeed.

We always complain why there’s pain and suffering, instead of enduring it for victory and happiness.

We always search the true meaning of human existence, without finding the true essence of God’s holiness.

My Intelligence Quotient(IQ) Test May 8, 2006

Iq_certificate_1 For the very first time to take an IQ test on line is quite exciting. The test is quite similar to the exam given by companies for hiring staff. The only difference is that the on-line test gives your IQ level  and compare it to other people who took the test. The on-line IQ test offered by www.tickle.com/tests provides the most thorough and scientifically accurate IQ test on the web - it’s free, private and developed by PhDs. According to tickle that there’s more to intelligence than a single number, a single score or a single label. Tickle uses four distinguishable Intelligence Scales, namely: mathematical intelligence, visual-spatial intelligence, linguistic intelligence, and logic intelligence. By analysing the individual scores on those four dimensions, Tickle is able to look beyond the raw IQ score into how you process information and thereby determine individual intellectual type.
Im quite fortunate to get my IQ report free of charge., otherwise I have to purchase it from Tickle. I got it free because I was the top-scorer (maybe on the day I took the exam, I dont know) having a score of 117. Most of the people are between 70 and 130.
According to the result, my intellectual type is a Visual Mathematican. It means that I have a strong ability to process visual-spatial and mathematical information, including my strength in logic. Specifically, my mathematical intellgence scale is 80% which means that my score is higher than 70-80% of people who took the test and 20-30% scored higher than me. My visual-spatial intelligence is 100%;  linguistic intelligence is 30% (which is my weak point) and logical intelligence of 80%. This is really a good yardstick to help me improve my talents.
Tickle also provides other tests concerning career, family, relationship, education and lifestyle. I encourage everyone to visit the site and take some of the tests you like. Good luck and enjoy!

40 Rules of My Simple Life May 7, 2006

Reading the book of the British writer, Richard Templar entitled ‘The Rules of Life’ (2006) inspired me to write my own rules - a very personal code  of my 40 years of living. This is not something to prescribe and preach to my readers but rather sharing my thoughts on how i survive and making (still on-going) my life better, happier and more fulfilling and rewarding. This is also a reminder for me to be more focused of what Im want in life, to monitor my personal progress and something to live up to. Hopefully, I will add one rule every year just to show that Im alive and survive another year. Accordingly I will be able to post a discussion for each rule how it applies to me or maybe to you as well. In summary, I personally encourage you to find out what behind the ‘first letter’ of each rule tells you after ticking-out the rest of the first letters from the 40 rules.

Rule 1: T-hank God for everything; Rule 2: H-ome is the beginning of everything; Rule 3: E-mbrace life with open heart and mind; Rule 4: R-ead, (w)rite, and recite (3Rs); Rule 5: U-se your potentials; Rule 6: L-ove your parents and grandparents; Rule 7: E-xplore and be adventorous; Rule 8: S-ing a song, have a beat to dance and cook a meal; Rule 9: O-bserve, learn and remember; Rule 10: F-riendship saves life;

Rule 11: M-otivation comes first, then commitment; Rule 12: Y-esterday is the past, today is now; Rule 13: S-uccess is temporal, savour it with gusto; Rule 14: I-mperfection always need a room for improvement; Rule 15: M-arriage is a choice not compulsory (not for everyone); Rule 16: P-ray and have time to listen to Him; Rule 17: L-ove your friends and neighbors; Rule 18: E-ducation is pricelss; Rule 19: L-earn to accept criticism and defeat; Rule 20: I-nnovation comes freom imitation;

Rule 21: F-ailure exists with success, Rule 22: E-njoy your work and have time to play; Rule 23: T-raveling makes life refreshing; Rule 24: H-obbies do not have rules; Rule 25: I-nitiate rather than wait; Rule 26: N-ever underestimate yourself; Rule 27: K-eep a healthy mind and body; Rule 28: P-raise and reward yourself; Rule 29: O-bey your conscience;

Rule 30: S-hare a smile; Rule 31: I-nvite a good conversation with strangers; Rule 32: T-ake a risk and feel the difference; Rule 33: I-gnorance leads to discovery; Rule 34: V-oice-out if you need help; Rule 35: E-verything has reasons; Rule 36: Y-outhful attitude brings life back to life; Rule 37: O-uch, it hurts; Rule 38: U-niversity (school) treats as our second home; Rule 39: N-ever give-up, move on; and Rule 40: G-od is in-charge, enjoy the ride.

In God’s Presence March 27, 2006

This poem was written during my first semester at UQ (Australia) in 2002. This is the first literary work that i wrote in a foreign land. It was not really my lowest point in my life why i wrote this poem, however, i just felt His strong presence during those early days of my stay in Brisbane. Well, not only during those days but for my entire stay as a postgrad student that He always there to remind me of the ‘purpose of living’. Sharing this poetic piece is also showing my faith on Him, how lucky I am to enjoy the so called ‘life’.

In Your Presence . . .

            in Your presence,

i feel your breathe of comfort,

easing the pain from my worldly desire –

                                                and everything turns fine.

            in Your presence,

                                    i feel your forgiveness

giving me another chance to try

do more things worth living –

and able to forget the hurt feelings.

            in Your presence,

i found PEACE, that everyone’s looking for

calmness and quietness of mind –

an openness to face the world with pride.

i found HOPE, a single sound that conquers all

the promise of the future’s beginning.

and i found LOVE – a golden word

that brings joy to my weary heart!

Learning:a continuous process for one’s inspiration March 20, 2006

Inspiration originates from everything i do – between the moment i blink my eyes in the morning and the time before i create an annoying sound during my sleep at night. Every moment in my daily existence is a blessing! Thus, inspiration is a product of the wonderful gifts of life…

inspiration is also the main key for updating my friendster’s blog .there’s so much to write and share with everyone who have access to my personal blog. sometimes however, due to my present work as an international student hinders me to do it, in a lesser degree… but i will always make an effort to tell something about my simple life, a way of showing my appreciation of living through my writing…

Minicertificate_1 receiving copies of my certificates and thesis early this year were another achievements to count in my learning cycle. It is an achievement because the completion of my research program at the Univ of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, Australia ( UQ website) was the outcome of my strong determination to work independently and the patience to finish my studies on time… UQ conferred my degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Environmental Engineering last 30 Nov 2005. unfortunately, i was not able to attend the graduation last Dec 7, but im thinking of joining the ceremony this year in Thailand or maybe in Brisbane. my thesis is entitled ‘Siting Development for Land Surface Disposal in the Philippines’ focused on the proper management of toxic and hazardous wastes in developing countries like the Philippines which is one of the pressing issues to improving environmental quality. i had the opportunity to develop a conceptual framework on how to identify feasible land surface (landfill) sites for this kind of waste using geographic information system (GIS)… and one of the major factors that intensified the improper waste disposal is not only contributed by the NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) attitude but also the industries’ attitude – WHIFFY (we-had-it-freely-for-years)…

on the other hand, through this rare opportunity of learning, i was able to explore Australia – the place down under! as i mentioned in my last year’s travel photography article published in Manila Bulletin, Picture Perfect section dated August 10, 2005 that traveling is always part of my agenda in life and it always coupled with study/work and hobby. it was a wonderful feeling to look back the warmth-kindness of our kababayan, and having a great learning and traveling experience in a one-of-a-kind-atmosphere – there’s place like home down under! my short visits to Sydney,Melbourne, Canberra and two-year stay in Brisbane were worth reminiscing and inspired me to continue my inspiration to learn what life can offer; and explore the globe in the years to come…

Ash Wednesday - the start of Lent March 16, 2006

I am not a devoted Catholic, but i fully acknowledge the existence of one God – creator of heaven and earth. I know that I have a loving Father who always there to give comfort and always at my side during the happiest and hardest times of my life. And I believe that He will never abandon His children, never, even His children disowned Him. Instead He will shower us His divine mercy to bring us back to His mantle of love and protection. And that is the basic reason why I maintain my son-father relationship with Him – an ultimate struggle everyday of my life!

Celebrating the Lent season this year is quite special because I’m here in the other side of the world. A place where religion is one of the talks of the town – even brings conflict among communities for many years. In the brighter side, it gives me a clearer understanding of the celebration and how I could improve my relationship with Him for the years to come. God always have plans for everyone and it is our task to work it out. Being away from home again is not really my plan, either. Having that, I think God has something prepared for me for the next 3 years of my stay in Northern Ireland.

I attended the Ash Wednesday celebration this month in a big lecture hall in the University of Ulster. The celebration was a good start of having a short chat with the priest who does regular mass at the campus every week which I have not attended for the past 6 months that I have been here (instead I attend the Sunday mass outside, 15 minutes walk from the campus). That day, was also memorable for me being asked to take part in the mass – to lead the ‘prayers of the faithful’ which was a meaningful act of leading the mass attendees (250 -300 students and staff) to pray and ask the guidance of our Lord. Having that, it also gave me some flashback memories of my AIT days as an active member of the Catholic community in the Institute for almost 3 years. I think my close involvement with the Filipino community in AIT (14 years ago) helped me a lot to strengthen my faith to God for the past 39 years and hopefully living my life in His guidance for the next 50-60 years!

As part of the homily, the priest reminded us the three important things to do, making our Lent a meaningful one! These are: PRAYING, GIVING and FASTING… As a personal reflection, PRAYING is a powerful tool to have a quiet and open communication with God. Having a few minutes of silence in the presence of God will not really takes much of our time. Aside from reciting the ‘Our father’ and ‘Hail Mary’, we could spend few minutes of thanking God for a nice day or even asking forgiveness for hurting other people’s feelings or asking even for help on a bad day! Or maybe, we could include a bit of asking for peace for our troubled world, especially our country, the Philippines or for someone we don’t really know – like victims of war, famine, hunger, poverty and epidemic (HIV and AIDS)…

GIVING is a sign of our complete acknowledgment of the blessings and miracles that we received everyday, and one way of giving it back to other people and to the ones we loved! Truly indeed, giving is a way of sharing our blessings, showing our generosity to others, not to expect in return! Sometimes, it is hard to share our material blessings in life because of our greediness and boastfulness… and to some extent we are not contented of what we have and we look for more to satisfy our selfishness… During this season, giving is not only for sharing tangible things, but it is more of giving out our talents to others, spare valuable time with our loved ones, and most of all doing good stuffs not for personal gains but for others’ welfare.

And FASTING is a hard thing to accomplish even within just a very short period of time. My understanding for fasting is the way the Muslim community practice during the Ramadan – less food intake! It is beyond that, it is more on how to change your lifestyle – buying/shopping, indulgence to material things and vices (to some extent addiction), and anything that is quite beyond the usual norm of living – in other words: EXTRAVAGANCE! It really struck me because, frankly I’m a kind of person who loves to buy clothes and accessories, do traveling and buy things for my hobbies! No regrets for doing that, but celebrating the lent season is only a reminder for me to slow down and be more sensitive to what I really need, and spending too much is not good for the pockets or even to my bank account, not to mention my credit card!

Overall, the Lent is always reminding us the never-ending love of Jesus, the son of God who spares His life for us – for the forgiveness of our sins! Indeed, what a noble act for Jesus, giving us the eternal hope for Heaven – a place for His Father’s beloved sons and daughters!
